What the airport itself currently publishes
José María Córdova Airport says public buses from the airport serve Medellín and that airport-to-Rionegro buses/colectivos operate from the arrivals area. The airport describes the Rionegro service as running approximately from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

What Rionegro publishes for 2026
Somos Movilidad currently lists the local airport route from 4:15 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day, including Sundays and holidays, and publishes a 2026 airport-route fare of COP 3,400. That gets you between the airport and Rionegro; it is not a direct airport-to-Guatapé coach.

Arrival-day rule: protect yourself from a bad flight day
If your flight is delayed, immigration runs long, or you land tired, do not turn a Guatapé plan into a race. A flexible private vehicle or an overnight near the airport can be more sensible than stacking a rock climb and boat reservation onto a fragile arrival window.
Can you turn airport pickup into the Guatapé day?
Yes, if the operator explicitly agrees to airport pickup and safe luggage storage. This is exactly the use case where private logistics can be more valuable than a standard group day tour: you are paying to combine a transfer with sightseeing rather than paying for two separate movements.
Three questions to ask before booking
- Does the quoted route begin at MDE, not a Medellín hotel?
- Can luggage remain secured while you visit El Peñol or town?
- Does the final drop-off end in Guatapé, Medellín, or back at the airport?
Flying out after Guatapé?
Reverse the logic and make the airport deadline the non-negotiable part of the day. Do not put a boat ride, lunch and road transfer back-to-back with no buffer. If you have luggage and an international departure, a defined private pickup is the cleanest format to compare.
